Dr. Ricardo Azziz

Medical College of Georgia President Ricardo Azziz brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in biomedical research, education and health care to his position overseeing Georgia’s health sciences university.

Azziz came to MCG from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he held the Helping Hand of Los Angeles Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also served as director of the Center for Androgen-Related Research and Discovery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, one of the largest free-standing medical centers in the western United States.

In addition to his UCLA chair, he served as the David Geffen School of Medicine professor and vice chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, professor of medicine, deputy director of the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and assistant dean for clinical and translational sciences.

At UCLA and Cedars-Sinai, Azziz led institution-wide initiatives to measure and improve faculty recruitment, retention, productivity and satisfaction, as well as academic excellence.

Azziz served on the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 1987 to 2002, where he directed the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Training Program.

A native of Uruguay, he earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and master’s degrees in public health and business administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University Hospital and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Azziz is eager to use his considerable skills and experience advancing MCG’s mission of improving health and reducing the burden of illness on society.
