The Centers of Innovation (COI), an official part of the Global Commerce division at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, is a program designed to accelerate the growth of technology-based companies.
Formed in 2003 by Governor Sonny Perdue, COI is comprised of six centers: agribusiness, aerospace, energy, life sciences, logistics and manufacturing. Located in Atlanta, Augusta, Gainesville, Savannah, Tifton and Warner Robins, each center provides statewide strategic industry expertise by being a complete source of information. Tangible services include access to university-level research and development, product commercialization, industry-specific business counsel, matching research grants for qualified companies, significant networking opportunities and connecting clients to potential investor networks.
While many of the core services are similar in concept throughout the entire program, each center brings specialty services - including industry specific contacts and knowledge to the table. For example, the agribusiness center offers on-site access to state and national research labs; logistics' expertise is coupled with a working relationship with the Georgia Ports Authority; the life sciences center is located in heart of the Medical College of Georgia and the manufacturing center provides customized training with the latest in robotics equipment.
During the year, COI accomplished significant milestones, including creating a new Logistics Development Center; establishing the first comprehensive, statewide logistics industry database and map; sponsoring the first bio-energy conference, and forging the first Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the State and Warner Robins Air Force Base.
The COI program provides the final piece to the array of services already provided through GDEcD's Small Business and Innovation division. The Department's small business resources and services; industry relocation and expansion services, and more offer the direct assistance needed for businesses to succeed.
COI is strengthened by its affiliation with the OneGeorgia Authority and the entire University System of Georgia, including research universities and technical colleges.
